Martha’s Vineyard offers the visitor an opportunity to experience an incredible array of gorgeous flowers, gardens, and farms. As you explore the island you may come upon beautiful panoramic fields filled with wildflowers. You will most likely find wild oats, marsh grasses, milkweed pods, cattails and bittersweet. Fields of flowers grow well into October and some of the vibrant colors are truly spectacular. If you are interested in purchasing flowers that are grown locally you can do so at The Farmers Market in West Tisbury every Wednesday and Saturday, as well as local flower stands along the road, mostly as you head up-island. After passing the Nip ‘N’ Tuck Farm, heading towards the center of West Tisbury on the right hand side, there is a small stand featuring zinnias and cosmos in the mid to late summer. As you approach the famous Takemmy Farm, another rustic little flower stand comes into view. With easy parking and nicely arranged bouquets from spring until fall, this is a place to stop for a refreshing break on your way up island. Polly Hill’s Arboretum is a favorite of garden lovers. Located on State Road in West Tisbury about a mile past Takemmy Farm the gardens are flourishing with gorgeous plants and blossoms. Polly Hill was especially well known for her huge magnolias with incredibly perfect white flowers. Another spot for the avid gardener to visit is Mytoi Gardens on the island Of Chappaquiddick. In 1958 the property was donated to the Trustees of Reservations, by Mary Wakeman. The garden contains exotic and native plants many of which remain visually attractive throughout the year. In February you will find witch hazel in bloom. The brilliant colors appear in spring with the appearance of azaleas, primrose, wild roses, lady’s slippers and rhododendrons, to mention a few. The Beautiful Japanese Iris highlight the pond in summer. The island is replete with well stocked garden centers and nurseries to assist you in creating a spectacular garden of your own.
